4 - To Better Times Ahead

“So I got to the coffee shop, and the police were there. One of those gamer geeks noticed you grab him as that bastard carried you by, and he followed them. When he saw the guy dump you into the back of Timothy's car, he remembered the other day and called the police.”

“Oh good. I barely remember trying to get his help. I'm really glad he stepped in. But anyway... what happened then?”

Anna was on her second day of recovery, snuggled up on her futon with a Thermos of chicken noodle soup and Jake curled up at her side. He had been looking after her ever since bringing her home from her ordeal in Strawberry Canyon. Not taking advantage, not pushing her to get better faster than she could... just tending to her, and hanging out, watching movies and talking. Finally, midmorning of the second day, her hangover from the knockout drug had weakened enough that she could talk seriously about her ordeal.

Jake hesitated. “Well, the cops already had that asshole barista in cuffs, and were questioning the gamer guys and the other customers. They were starting a search for you, but I knew that if I didn't help, they might not get there in time. So I took off and—”

“W... wait,” she mumbled, confused. “How did you know where to find me?”

“Oh that.” He glanced around nervously for a moment, and she wondered what he was hiding. But then he said simply, “You know that GPS tracker he tried to slip into your purse? There's an electronics mega-store down in West Berkeley that sells them. I attached one to his car the day before, so I could keep an eye on him.”

“Wow. Quick thinking. I um... I didn't even think of tracking him to keep away from him.”

“Well, I have a friend who is a giant electronics nerd, and he helped me figure out how to set the thing up over the phone.” He was elaborating a lot. More than he needed to. Isn't that a sign he's lying about something? But his face held so much honest concern that she finally shook off her suspicions. I'm just paranoid because of all the crap that has happened.

“So you found me.”

“Yeah, I uh... well, I did punch the guy a couple times, I admit.”

Roaring, like a huge furious animal. The car, rocking back and forth. Sound of bones breaking.

Anna shook her head convulsively. The drug had left her with a headful of bizarre half-dreams.

The doctor he had taken her to warned that hallucinations were one very common effect of the drug they’d found in her system. “Thanks. Wish I could have hit him a few times myself.”

“Yeah. Well…” His ears reddened a little. “Not my finest moment, but God knows he had it coming.” He took a deep breath. “I grabbed you, and he took off in his car at top speed up through the hills.”

“Crash report says he ran into a tree up there.”

“Yeah. Went through the windshield.
